Botox for migraines

Migraine Headache

Many people suffer from tension headaches or migraines. The cause of most headaches is unknown, but there are indications that, among other things, there is increased tension in certain muscles.

How Botox works against migraines

Botox is a substance that has been shown to have a positive effect in recent years in all kinds of conditions where there is increased muscle tension. The mechanism of action is still the subject of various studies, but experience shows that about 70% of migraine (and other headache) patients benefit from the use of Botox. In these patients there is a clear relief of the complaints.

In general, a treatment of the frown muscle is sufficient to achieve a clear improvement of the complaints. Sometimes, based on pain, the back of the head can also be treated. In practice, it comes down to the fact that the patient keeps a diary in order to "score" what the effect of the Botox is on the headache symptoms in his specific situation. By means of a number of injections in a certain area, the relevant muscles are made less strong. The injections are not experienced as painful by most patients.

Temporary effect

The effect of the treatment is always temporary (2-6 months). Possible side effects of treatment with Botox are related to the injection itself (possibly a small bruise) and the effect of the treatment; sometimes there is some muscle weakness in the injected muscles. This effect is also always temporary.

Personal Advice

If you suffer from (tension) headaches or migraine attacks, a treatment with Botox can sometimes offer a solution. Botox may be an option if you do not tolerate migraine medication well, or if medication does not have sufficient effect.

At Aesthetic Beauty Center you can make an appointment for a no-obligation consultation. The treatment is carried out quickly, has hardly any risks and gives good results for many people.

The Treatment

A migraine treatment starts with a consultation. Following this consultation, the doctor places the Botox injections in different places. The location of these injections therefore depends entirely on the complaints you experience. The injections can be in the forehead, neck, back of the head and at the temples.

After the Treatment

We recommend that you do not exercise on the day of the treatment. Please note: you should not lie down for two hours after the Botox treatment.

Check-up, after-treatment and re-treatment

If you wish, you can come for a check-up after 2 to a maximum of 3 weeks to evaluate the treatment.

Price

We offer this treatment from € 350,-

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Migraine?

Migraine differs from 'normal' tension headaches by the severity of the pain and additional nausea, hypersensitivity to light and sound and/or symptoms of loss of consciousness. The pain is usually on one side of the head and is difficult to treat. Unnoticed muscle tension plays a role in migraines.

Why botox for migraines?

One of the possible causes of migraines is the unconscious tightening of the muscles. By botulinum toxin injections, a reduction of the complaints is seen. Migraine attacks decrease in intensity, duration and/or frequency.

Is Botox a Painful Treatment?

The needles that are used are fine and short. The treatment is therefore not really painful. If necessary, the skin that is being treated can be rubbed with an anesthetic cream beforehand. This further limits the feeling. There is also no post-pain afterwards.

What are the side effects of botox for migraines?

Botox is a relatively safe cosmetic procedure that has few to no side effects. The treated skin may be red and slightly swollen. This often disappears within a few hours of treatment. For safe treatment, always have the botulinum toxin injected by an experienced cosmetician in a suitable, sterile area.

What if botox does not have the desired effect?

Despite the fact that botox treatments are known for their effectiveness, unfortunately not everyone benefits from a treatment. During an intake, your migraine complaints will be discussed in detail. Try to indicate as clearly as possible where exactly you experience the complaints, so that a cosmetic doctor can accurately determine the injection sites. Do you notice little improvement in the complaints after the treatment or does the headache come from a different place? Then discuss this with the doctor.
